How to make these gorgeous over-sized hoop earrings in 8 EASY STEPS!

Hi everyone!

As promised, I have started to work on some free jewellery tutorials for you to have a go at! I absolutely love making jewellery - it is therapeutic (unless you have lots of urgent orders to dispatch!) and the results are fast...once you have learned a series of basic techniques, the sky really is your limit to what you can create!

As it's that festive time of year, where looking glamorous and sparkly is a must, I thought I'd start off the tutorials with some fabulous over-sized hoop earrings! These are super-easy to make (honest!) and will take only ten minutes to make. I hope you enjoy the tutorial, and if you get stuck or have any questions, feel free to email me at carabijoux@aol.com.

Step 1 - Gather the tools that you need to complete the earrings

To make these earrings, you will need two types of pliers - round nose pliers, and flat nose pliers. You could use only round nose pliers, however I recommend that you use both. Both types of pliers are relatively cheap to buy, and readily available on the internet or in hobbyist or beading shops.

Step 2 - Gather the materials you will need to complete the earrings

You will need the above materials to make the earrings. These include:

Fishhook earwires - I use Sterling Silver in all of my jewellery designs, however the wires come in many different materials and finishes - the most popular for beginners being Silver Plated.

Large open-hoop earring wires - These wires come in many different sizes. You need to ensure that the wires you buy are open at the top, ready for you to string on your own beads.

Selection of beads - This is the fun part! Choose an assortment of beads - get creative! Some of my most popular designs are made with 'bead soup' - a random mixture of beads that although totally different, seem to complement each other. Here I am using 8mm Swarovski Crystal Round Faceted Beads in a special effects coating, but you really can use any type of bead (so long as it has a hole running through the centre).

Again you can easily find all of these items online, or in your nearest hobby or craft shop.

Step 3 - Thread your beads on to the wires

Slide your chosen beads onto the wires. You can either totally fill the wires so the whole hoop is covered by beads, leave some of the wire showing, like the ones in my example.

Step 4 - Close the hoop wires together

Take the end of the wire hoop, and insert it into the slot at the top of the hoop. Don't worry if it's not secure - that's covered in the next step! To ensure the hoop wires don't come undone, you can put a little glue on the tip before inserting into the slot. I recommend a strong crafters glue, or a 2-part epoxy resin. E-6000 is a good 1-part epoxy resin, and you only need a very small amount. This is optional - you don't need to use glue if you don't want to!

Step 5 - Close the slots with your flat nose pliers

Take your flat nose pliers, and use them to squeeze the slot together around the wire. I also like to tighten up the other side too to ensure both slots are fully closed. The aim here is to ensure the wire does not pop out from the slot - although try not to press so hard that you dent the wire. A gentle but firm squeeze will be fine!

Step Six - Open the loop of the ear wires

Using your round nose pliers, gently open out the loop at the bottom of the ear wire. You only need to open them wide enough to insert the top of the wire loop.

Step Seven - Insert the wire loop into the ear wire

Insert the wire hoop into the ear wire.

Step Eight - Close the loop on the ear wire

Using your round nose pliers, close the loop of the ear wire so that it is fully closed and secure.

And that's it! You have yourself a gorgeous pair of sparkly earrings!

I really hope you enjoyed this first tutorial, and I am working on more projects to share with you! If anyone has a special request, or general jewellery-making question, please don't hesitate to email me!

It's all in the tools.....

Hi everyone!

As a designer and maker of handmade jewellery, one of the pivotal parts of my business is the tools I use to create my designs. Like a painter with his prized paintbrush, and a chef who insists on only using the knife he bought at the start of his career that cost him a month's rent, my tools are the foundation of every piece of jewellery I make.

Over the last 20 years, I have experimented with all sorts of pliers, cutters, crimpers, nippers...the choice out there is overwhelming when it comes to choosing the tools of your trade! Gadgets that do ten things at once, round nosed pliers that double as nipper tools, magic crimping plier...the list is endless!

But you know what? One of my most trusted and favourite tools is a pair of pliers that I bought when I was 7 years old (well, I say 'I' bought them...my parents bought them for me with my pocket money!). I went on my first jewellery making course when I was 7 in my hometown of Chester, and I felt so incredibly grown-up coming home with my own set of beautiful, red-handled pliers. Fully spring-loaded, with a fine rounded tip, they were my pride and joy - and I made endless pieces of jewellery with them.

I still use the very same pliers today...the spring is slightly squeaky, but they are just as reliable as they were 20 years ago. I have in excess of fifteen different pliers and cutters, but every time I use these pliers they remind me of my journey as a maker, and that inspires me to carry on my lifelong ambition of being a jewellery designer...

And here they are...the star of the show!

What tools do you use in your trade that you particularly love to use? If you're a writer, you may have a favourite fountain pen that you have used since high school, or if you are a nail technician you may have a beloved brush that just works with your hand perfectly...

I'd love to hear about your treasured tools!

Display Dilemmas...

Well, here's the first general rambling post that I promised you all! ;0)

Something I have always found challenging about running a handmade jewellery business is displaying my jewellery at fairs and home jewellery parties. In the past, I made much larger, chunkier jewellery, which was difficult to fit into boxes. This presented problems when coming to display them on a table - making them look attractively laid out was really difficult.

I had my first home jewellery party last night since designing my new range, and I am so pleased at how it all looked together! I have spent over a year designing the pieces that are now in my range, and although I've had them displayed next to each other at home, it was really great to see them all together. The packaging in particular looked amazing - really sumptuous and just oozes quality. Sadly my camera decided to die on me last night, but I did manage to get a cheeky photo from one of the guests of the table laid out:

So apologies for the poor photo...but you get the idea! I was trying to dig out some photos of jewellery parties from yesteryear, to see how far I have come...

My range has come such a long way, and I'm so proud of what I have achieved. I think my display looks so much more professional now...I've finally got it just how I want it!!

Much love..

I think I need a new approach to blogging...

Well faithful followers, I think I need to re-think my blogging strategy.

It may appear on the surface that I have been shirking my blogging responsibilities. However it's more a case of 'bloggers block' (if there is such a thing..). You would not believe the amount of times I start a blog post, then my mind goes blank, despite having a huge amount to say. I often lie awake at night with ideas and post subjects racing through my mind..but when I sit down to type, it's like someone opened the trap door and they fell through...

I think I've been taking this whole blogging thing too seriously. Don't get me wrong...I take my blog very seriously, but this seriousness has started to verge on procrastination. Wow that's a big word for someone so tired and weary! By nature, I'm a bit of a perfectionist (well, in some things anyway!), and if something is even remotely unsatisfactory, I discard it, feeling guilty for just having spent half an hour typing only to hit the delete button prematurely.

So...from now on, I'm not going to think too much about it. I'm just going to type what I feel, and quit the procrastination. Life's too short, and I have lots I want to share with you!

I just hope you find what I have to share interesting ;0)

Having a baby = not enough hours in the day!

Well hello there!

Once again, I do feel the need to apologise for my lack of posts...I promise I haven't forgotten about you all! They say babies are hard work..well, that's definitely true lol! Poppy is now 16 weeks old, and we're finally settling in to some sort of routine...which includes sessions of giggling, interspersed with hysterical crying ;0)...

Being a mummy is more than I could ever have expected it to be...exciting, scary, overwhelming, wonderful...she is my world, and nothing could ever compare to seeing the big grin on her face when she sees me first thing in the morning...

Well, enough of the soppy stuff...! Although I haven't been posting much on my blog, I have been full steam ahead where Carabijoux is concerned. Despite the challenges of caring for a newborn, I have somehow managed to increase my line of designs, and learned new techniques and found inspiring new ideas to share with you...

It was always my intention to build on the amount of designs I have in my shop...but as with all small businesses, adding inventory does take time. So I decided to really listen to the feedback my Facebook fans and customers have been giving me on what they would like more of, and one thing that really stood out was a need for small, simple earrings. So I researched..then researched some more...and researched some more again...until I finally found the materials I needed to make some fabulous Swarovski stud earrings. Now this probably sounds quite easy - I have to admit I didn't think finding the right materials for these would be so difficult! But it took me a long time (and a LOT of trial and error!) to get these earrings just right.

Swarovski Crystal Sterling Silver Stud Earrings (http://www.etsy.com/listing/84238354/swarovski-stud-earrings-crystal-ab)
I am currently making these earrings in different colours, as they're just so versatile...watch this space!

Anyway..I'd better go get to work! We are moving house in just over a week, so lots to do! I will update later, and I promise to post much, much for often!

I'm back! And to celebrate...I've created a Treasury!

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for being so patient while I settled in with our new addition to the family! Poppy is doing so well..I can't believe she's 13 weeks old already!

I have got so many exciting things to tell you about the new pieces I have been working on! (no mean feat with a young baby, I might add lol!). But for now, I wanted to share a Treasury I created with you: All Bagged Up! A collection of my favourite bags on Etsy! Enjoy...

My apologies for the lack of posts lately!

Hi there everyone!

I realise that I haven't posted for quite some time...and I'd like to apologise for the lack of any Carabijoux activity lately! I do have a good excuse though...I've been busy having a baby!

Sadly I was quite poorly with pre-eclampsia for some weeks at the end of my pregnancy, so I didn't have much chance to work on my jewellery. But our beautiful daughter, Poppy Rose, was born on Saturday 2nd July 2011, weighing 7lb 4oz, and was born by emergency c-section.

I'm just starting to recover from my surgery, and we are all settling in as a new family. But I promise I will be back very soon with some new jewellery designs!

Take care!

Tangerine Dream!

Hi everyone!

I was in the mood for creating a Treasury this morning! I have been feeling a little bit tired lately (I'm sure being 7 months pregnant has something to do with that) so I felt inspired to do a wake-me-up themed Treasury! There's nothing more invigorating than a splash of tangerine...so these orange segments should get you going!

I love a challenge.....!

Hey everyone!

As the title says...I love a good challenge! A friend of mine recently asked me to make a necklace for her - in the theme of 'Nail Technician'. My friend is a Nail Tech herself, and she really wanted a necklace in my style, that reflects her occupation (and love of her life!).

I spent quite a while researching different options - I found charms in the shape of nail varnish bottles, charms in the shape of hands and feet...even though they were cute, they didn't quite fit. Eventually, we came across a beautiful Sterling Silver nail file charm. It was perfect! I had it shipped in from the USA specially for Del, and paired it with a sparkling 8mm Swarovski Crystal Rivoli in AB...they look so beautiful together!

So here is the end result! I am able to make more of these Nail Tech necklaces on a custom basis - they cost £29.50, and have free International P&P. Or if anyone else has any interesting occupations I can try and design a necklace for that would be so exciting!

Wedding Ideas! Number One...

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all ok!

Well, I know a lot of Carabijoux followers are brides-to-be, and I got to thinking that I'd love to share some ideas with you of things that I did for my own wedding. I had the most AMAZING day, and I couldn't have asked for any better. We didn't have a major budget for our wedding, and we made a lot of the little details ourselves. There were a few real stand-out ideas that went down so well with our guests, and I thought I would share them for you. I hope they give you some inspiration for your own big day!

The first idea I wanted to share with you was our way of celebrating other peoples weddings on our special day. A wedding is a day of love, and we wanted to extend this feeling to our guests. We asked each of them to send us a photograph of them on their special day, which we then laminated and tied on the ivy with pink ribbon outside the chapel. We also included photographs of loved ones who are no longer with us.

This was such a lovely touch, and was a real talking point as people came into the chapel for the ceremony. Our guests were reminded of their wedding day, and there was the odd giggle at the extravagant hairstyles or hideous bridesmaid dresses! Everyone commented how lovely it was.. it went down so well! You can see some of them here on this photograph...

I hope to share some of my other ideas with you soon! If anyone else has any other suggestions or inspirations I'd love to hear them! :0)

My first ever 'discount offer'...!

Good evening my lovely followers!

Well, I have NEVER had a discount offer at Carabijoux. Ever.

However, I decided that with the opening of my Etsy shop a month ago, maybe it is time to embrace a new approach to having a sale.

I have always thought of 'sales' as a sign of desperation. If I see someone selling off their merchandise for rock-bottom prices, it really does put me off. Do they sell so little of their work that they really have to stoop to such low prices to shift it? However lately I am starting to see 'sales' in a different light. With the economy up in the air, and money being tight for everyone, I wonder whether sales are a much-appreciated reprieve for customers who love an item, but just can't quite afford it, or justify spending their hard-earned cash on it...

My Cubist pendant in Peridot is an ideal Spring gift! You can purchase it here in my Etsy shop:  http://www.etsy.com/listing/71379862/stunning-swarovski-crystal-cubist

So, there you have it! There are SO many Easter Eggs on the supermarket shelves at the moment, I'd like to think that my jewellery is an beautiful alternative that, unlike an Easter Egg, can be worn and treasured for years to come. Of course you could just be treating yourself...but I thought Easter is a great theme for a spring sale! You can recieve a 20% discount on all items in my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/carabijoux) by entering coupon code 'EASTER2011' at checkout...this coupon is available to use until Friday 22nd April 2011.

Happy shopping! :0)

Hi everyone!

Today's post is about a new design I added to my Etsy shop yesterday. Floral is definitely IN this year, and set to be a huge trend on the bridal scene. These beautiful Swarovski Crystal earrings are just £15.50, and are presented in one of my luscious Carabijoux gift boxes. These would make a great gift for a bridesmaid, as they can wear them again and again..even after the big day!

You can buy these earrings here in my Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/listing/71858308/delicate-swarovski-crystal-flower

Fresh, inspiring colours for Spring & Summer...

Hi everyone!

I have spent a fair bit of time lately researching the colours that will be reflected in the fashion collections for Spring & Summer 2011...these colours are now beginning to hit the high street now. I follow trends quite closely, and try to ensure that I offer pieces that will complement these colours perfectly.

Spring & Summer 2011 is all about positivity, and fresh, revitalising colours. Expect to find colours that will uplift, energize and soften...think fresh pastels, and pops of bright, invigorating colours that are sure to brighten your day!

Whilst people-watching over the last couple of weeks, I have noticed lots of florals...and the colours that complement florals, such as pinks, lemons, lavendars, mint and aquamarine. Most of my pendants are available to purchase in colours that will look perfect with this style...here are just a few examples. I will be adding some pendants in these colours to my Etsy shop over the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime I can make any of my pendants to order, for no extra cost...

It's here!!!

Hi everyone!

Well, as you can probably tell by now...the new Carabijoux logo is making itself at home!

I really hope that you all love the new style that Carabijoux is taking on...I'd love to explain a little bit more about why I've made these exciting changes...

I usually design my own branding and logo in Photoshop. As some of you may know, I have got a background in design, and whilst I'm no graphic designer, I'm usually able to find my way around Photoshop and Illustrator enough to create a logo or banner.

I designed my previous logo just over a year ago...My jewellery designs back then were almost 'vintage' looking, and the logo did fit the 'feel' of my work quite well. It worked, and I stuck with it.

Fast forward 18 months or so, and my jewellery 'style' has evolved so much that the logo just didn't seem to fit anymore. The way my jewellery has changed is probably something I could write a whole new post about, but my pieces are now much more cutting-edge, simple and modern...and I needed a logo to fit.

I had already decided on the colour before I looked into a new logo. In the past, I tended to use lots of pink for my branding. I am definitely a girly girl, and I adore pink. In previous years, my jewellery has often featured a lot of pink (I tended to choose it naturally for my work because it appealed so much to me), but now my designs seem to have outgrown the 'pink theme'. I got the inspiration for the new colour scheme from my new boxes. I know it sounds like putting the cart before the horse, but once I found the right packaging, I knew the branding would follow. This rich, delicious purple was just perfect...it's so grown-up, and regal...I decided that the new branding should be based around this wonderful, juicy berry colour.

I decided that it was time to call a professional for the new logo. My jewellery is now a premium line, and it needed a premium logo to complement it. After hours of trawling the internet, I eventually found MollySue Logos (please check her out: www.etsy.com/shop/mollysuelogos) - and we were instantly on the same wave length...something I find so important when working with a designer!

I explained to Karli that I wanted the branding to be 'upmarket', but with a relaxed and informal feel, that doesn't take itself too seriously. A lot of jewellery designers who use Swarovski seem to keep the branding very formal and ornate - whilst there is nothing wrong with that, it doesn't fit what my designs are all about. I'm passionate about showing Swarovski in a fun and creative way...and I needed the logo and banner to reflect this. We agreed that the text in the logo should be bold and different - the 'handwritten' style of the one we chose reflects the fact that the jewellery is handmade, with the strap line being a little more formal and structured.

Karli asked me whether I wanted a symbol included with the design. With purple being a traditionally regal colour, one associated with royalty and wealth, we thought it might be fun to include a crown somewhere in the design. I love the idea of using a symbol in my packaging and external branding, so a crown just seemed perfect. I absolutely adore the way Karli used the crown in the 'i' and 'j' of Carabijoux...it works perfectly!

So there you have it...the new Carabijoux logo and branding! I just love it, and I would really appreciate any feedback (good or bad!) that you guys may have on it!

Sorry for a long post today!

Carabijoux Pendant featured in another Treasury!

Hi everyone!

It's so lovely that Carabijoux pieces are being featured constantly in Treasuries. For those not familiar with a Treasury - it is an Etsy artist-curated collection of items that are centred around a particular theme.

My 'Swarovski Galactic Pendant in Tanzanite' has been featured in Lorenabr's Treasury - 'Dream Away'. Lorena has created a Treasury full of items that she loves...and what a fabulous Treasury it is!

Lorena is the founder of Balea Raitz Fashion, in which she designs and creates stunning clothing, swimwear and accessories. You can visit her Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/lorenabr or you can also follow her fantastic blog: http://invogueoneday.blogspot.com/

Hey everyone!

Well it's come around already...only seems like yesterday I did last week's Treasury!

This week I've been all inspired by lots of ideas for expanding my range for brides and bridesmaids, and have been busy making more tiaras. So I guess you could say I'm in the mood for love! A wedding is such a wonderful occasion..I loved every single minute of mine, and would do it again in a heartbeat (marrying the same man, of course!). My colour theme was hot pink, but there are so many delicious themes around today...I'd love to do it all again just so I could have fun with another colour scheme!

At the moment, I'm loving the 'Soft Romantic' look...verging on vintage, with a palette of soft pink and pastels. Lots of lovely textures and layered fabrics. So this week's Treasury is my pick of the Etsy handmade beauties that fit this style...enjoy!

Isn't technology amazing?

Hey everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well :0)

I had to share this with you all.... We had our 4D scan of our baby yesterday...so amazing! It's fantastic what technology allows us to see and do these days. It was such a magical experience...although our little lady decided to be shy and have her hands over her face for 90% of the scan! We did get a glimpse of her pretty little face though...

My article has been published!

Morning everyone!

Well I woke up to a nice surprise this morning...

A week or so ago I wrote an article for Rena Klingenberg's jewellery website: http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/. I have often visited this site over the last few years, and have found it to be a wealth of information about setting up your own jewellery business. At times it can be hard to try and establish yourself in a market that is so saturated, but Rena's website has always given me tips and advice on how to grow my business.

So I am so pleased that I have been able to make my own contribution to the site. You can read it here: http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/procrastination-the-story-of-the-worlds-biggest-procrastinator.html

Bridal jewellery...made easy!

Hey everyone!

I thought I'd share this with you...a little project in the making of mine!

I found it so very difficult when I was getting married to find suitable jewellery for myself, and for my bridesmaids. I wanted something special, but with having four bridesmaids my budget was quite limited. I also wanted something that they could keep and get lots of wear out of long after my wedding...it was really tough finding the right jewellery.

Some of my new pendants are absolutely perfect for bridal jewellery...not only for the bride, but also for the bridesmaids too! In particular are my Swarovski Heart pendants...

The larger pendant (18mm) would be ideal for the perfect finishing touch to any bridal gown...and then the smaller (14mm pendants) would be ideal for bridesmaids. Both pendant sizes come in a selection of colours, and are ready to wear with a Sterling Silver Octagonal chain...so will look fabulous for years to come! The pendants also all come in luxurious gift boxes...ready for giving straight to your ladies in waiting!

I will soon be offering these pendants as 'bundles' - for example, you can order the amount of necklaces you need in a convenient way in your chosen colour, at a set price (discounted from buying them individually). They are currently available to purchase in my Etsy store (www.etsy.com/shop/carabijoux). Watch this space for more information...coming soon!
