Isn't technology amazing?

Hey everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well :0)

I had to share this with you all.... We had our 4D scan of our baby yesterday...so amazing! It's fantastic what technology allows us to see and do these days. It was such a magical experience...although our little lady decided to be shy and have her hands over her face for 90% of the scan! We did get a glimpse of her pretty little face though...

My article has been published!

Morning everyone!

Well I woke up to a nice surprise this morning...

A week or so ago I wrote an article for Rena Klingenberg's jewellery website: http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/. I have often visited this site over the last few years, and have found it to be a wealth of information about setting up your own jewellery business. At times it can be hard to try and establish yourself in a market that is so saturated, but Rena's website has always given me tips and advice on how to grow my business.

So I am so pleased that I have been able to make my own contribution to the site. You can read it here: http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/procrastination-the-story-of-the-worlds-biggest-procrastinator.html

Bridal jewellery...made easy!

Hey everyone!

I thought I'd share this with you...a little project in the making of mine!

I found it so very difficult when I was getting married to find suitable jewellery for myself, and for my bridesmaids. I wanted something special, but with having four bridesmaids my budget was quite limited. I also wanted something that they could keep and get lots of wear out of long after my wedding...it was really tough finding the right jewellery.

Some of my new pendants are absolutely perfect for bridal jewellery...not only for the bride, but also for the bridesmaids too! In particular are my Swarovski Heart pendants...

The larger pendant (18mm) would be ideal for the perfect finishing touch to any bridal gown...and then the smaller (14mm pendants) would be ideal for bridesmaids. Both pendant sizes come in a selection of colours, and are ready to wear with a Sterling Silver Octagonal chain...so will look fabulous for years to come! The pendants also all come in luxurious gift boxes...ready for giving straight to your ladies in waiting!

I will soon be offering these pendants as 'bundles' - for example, you can order the amount of necklaces you need in a convenient way in your chosen colour, at a set price (discounted from buying them individually). They are currently available to purchase in my Etsy store (www.etsy.com/shop/carabijoux). Watch this space for more information...coming soon!

New tiara design - now available!

Hi everyone!

I have been busy designing some new tiaras that will soon be available in my Etsy shop...and here is the first! This tiara is just beautiful - very elegant and pure. It features over 90 Swarovski crystals, in a mix of Crystal AB & Rose. There are also a sprinkling of light pink diamantes, with a stem of fuschia pink diamantes in the centre.

This particular tiara is pink & clear, however I can make this design in a huge variety of colours!

I'm working on getting some better photographs taken, but for now here it is!

It's Treasury Friday! A Dose of Happiness!

Hi everyone!

As you all know, each Friday I create an Etsy Treasury - it's my favourite finds that relate to a certain theme. I thought a lot this week about what my theme would be, and I did come up with a few ideas. However it all changed this afternoon. I was driving home and a song came on the radio that I haven't heard in years. You know when you hear or see or smell something and it takes you back to another place and time? Well, that's just what this song did to me. It took me back to a really happy place - the hairs stood up on my arm. While I listened to the song I reflected on how things were then, and how things are now, and how blessed I am. Sometimes life can seem like such a struggle, but for the three minutes while I listened to that song I just had the biggest grin on my face!

So today's Treasury is items I feel just reflect my mood tonight! Colourful, expressive, vibrant...just a bit of sunshine! I hope you enjoy today's collection...

Thanks to those artists I featured for being so talented! We'd love to hear your thoughts and comments xx

Different directions...same brand?

Morning everyone!

I hope you are all well! I haven't posted for a couple of days...I've been busy making and creating :0)

The one thing I love about making jewellery is the way that inspiration comes from so many places. However sometimes, I get inspired by so many things it's difficult to know to make first! As I have mentioned in previous posts and my newsletter, I am currently working on a really exciting range of pendant necklaces. These necklaces look just stunning. I have finalised a couple of the new designs, and have been road-testing them by wearing them myself. The response has been so encouraging! Lots of people have commented on them whilst I am out and about...which is really lovely! I hope to have the new designs in my Etsy store within a fortnight...so watch this space!

But whilst I have been busy away working on the new range of pendants, I have had a sudden increased interest in my handmade tiaras. I have about three of four of my tiaras for sale on Etsy at the moment, and I am having quite a number of messages asking about them. I started making handmade tiaras about 8 months ago. It was something I'd always wanted to learn how to do, and last year I decided it was time to develop a new skill! It took quite a while to make tiaras that I felt were the quality I was striving for, and now I have honed my skills and materials I am proud to list them on Etsy. So it is looking like I will get to work on two completely different styles and in two directions, which is wonderful! I wondered whether I should open up a new Etsy shop exclusively selling my handmade tiaras, however after a lot of helpful feedback from my customers I think I will keep all of my items in the one shop. I'd love to hear any other opinions on this subject though!

So....the next project I will be working on after I have launched the new pendant range will be lots of scrummy handmade tiaras! I'm so excited...it's such a blessing to be able to do what you love to do :0)

First ever edition of my e-newsletter sent today!

Hi everyone!

I have been wanting to do a newsletter for some time, but it's something I've never quite had the time to look into properly.

So I have been busy researching away lately, and after weeks of work I finally sent out my first ever newsletter! I actually found writing the newsletter quite challenging - I wanted to put enough information in it to ensure it was an interesting read, with relevant details about Carabijoux, but I also didn't want to put too much! Figuring out the content has been quite hard, but I think it has turned out well in the end!

I'm going to try and do a newsletter every month if I can...I think it's a really good way to keep my customers updated with new products and what I have been up to. Hopefully they will get better and better each time I do them...it's all a big learning curve! :0)

If anyone would like to subscribe to the newsletter there is a quick sign-up link on the right side of this blog...I'd love to welcome you to my subscriber list!

Handmade or mass-produced??

Evening everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well!

I'm not quite sure where the subject for this post came from, but I think it's something that I've been thinking about for a while, and I'm sure it will come up in future posts!

I look around me, and all I see, every day, is mass-manufactured goods. Saturation. Everywhere you look there is a product or company desperate to get your attention - and ultimately for you to buy from them. Everywhere you look there's a special offer, or discount. Every day I get tonnes of junk mail through my letter box, all of it trying to get my attention (although it doesn't work - it goes straight in the shredder lol!).

So how can a crafter or small business compete with this level of market-domination? I feel jewellery in particular is a very difficult market to be in...these days, you can pick up perfectly nice costume jewellery from the local supermarket...and for a very reasonable price. You can pick up a cute necklace along with your cabbage, which is extremely convenient for the consumer who is looking for a quick fix or a last-minute gift for a friend.

So what are the differences between choosing handmade over mass-produced? I think that there are definitely advantages for buying handmade goods...in particular, there's something very satisfying knowing that you are buying from a 'person', instead of a 'corporation'. Does that necklace purchase you made from Costco (over here it's Asda!) mean anything to Mr Costco? No....well at least not on a personal level (although you may have made a tiny contribution to the end of year figures). When you buy off a crafter, or home-based designer, you know that that piece has been made with passion and love. When someone buys a piece of my jewellery, it gives me a huge sense of achievement, and pride. So when you buy handmade, you are not only buying a beautiful, one-of-a-kind item, but you are also making someone feel great about themselves.

I also find buying handmade is a much more pleasant experience. You often find when you buy handmade items that the package comes beautifully wrapped, which is all part of the overall feeling of the purchase...the seller wants you to enjoy opening their item, and wants you to get much enjoyment from it. Great time and care are taken on the sellers' part to ensure that the buyer has the best possible experience - probably not something you find if you bought a book from Amazon, for example.

Of course there are advantages in buying mass-produced items - probably the most notable is the cost. You probably could buy a similar item that is mass-produced to one that is handmade, and it would cost you less, but the overall experience you pay would be reflected in the price. I guess it's like in the supermarkets - I could go and buy my meat from the local superstore for a fraction of the price I'd pay for the same cut of meat in my local butchers...but I wouldn't be supporting my local community and getting a first-class service from a family-run business....

I think this subject is so interesting - and one that affects me directly. With jewellery so readily available and so very cheap, it's quite hard to ensure that you stand out above the competition. It's so great to see places like Etsy where handmade goods can be easily promoted and sold...I think it keeps the world more interesting. Who wants run-of-the-mill, when they can have unique?

Phew that was quite a long post for me! Thanks for reading guys...!

And the winner is....!

Alisha Stevens from Rhyl!

I thought it would be fun to do a free prize draw yesterday at the Bridal Fayre to win one of my new pendant designs. I pulled out a name at random today from all of the entries, and congratulations to Alisha Stevens! It was lovely meeting Alisha yesterday - she is getting married next July (correct me if I'm wrong there Alisha!) and she has the most amazing colour scheme! I don't know if I'm allowed to say (don't want to spoil the surprise Alisha!) but all I can say is I can't wait to see her pics!

Swarovski Heart & Key Pendant
This pendant features a stunning Swarovski Heart pendant in Light Vitrail, and a cute key charm...this is one of the new range that I'm working on at the moment, and will be available to purchase shortly!

Inspiration! Look at this quote I found...

Morning everyone!

Firstly welcome to any new followers! :)

I came across something this morning whilst I was browsing the net, and it really resonates with me. I'm sure that any creative person trying to 'make it' with their work will appreciate these wise words, but I think it can apply to anyone and everyone. Sometimes I think it's hard to see the wood for the trees, and it's easy to forget what we're really striving for. There are times in life when we can become complacent - especially if you have been trying to achieve something over a long period of time. So here goes...(ps. I have no idea who wrote this, and where it came from...)

"No more time to waste, no more excuses
Gotta reach out your arms and embrace the sun
No more time for self-pitying abuses
Gotta stand up and shout and say
'I am The One'
'Cause there's been too much crying and talk of being free
Gotta jump off that cliff and be who you were born to be..."

I just love this. I am forever saying 'Oh I'd love to do this...' or 'Wouldn't it be great if I could do that?'...but whether due to lack of confidence or just plain laziness, the act never materialises. So if you're feeling like you've come to a standstill in whatever it is you're trying to achieve - read those words above again, and go and embrace the sun :0)

An example of poor business ethics...

Hi everyone!

This is my musing for today!

As a small home-run business, I always keep  my eyes open for opportunities where I may find the opportunity to sell my work. Sometimes the piece sells on the spur of the moment in the most unlikely place, and sometimes I actively seek out the best place to be to make a sale. Today was an example of the latter - I attended a bridal fayre, with the hope that brides and bridesmaids will see my work, and hopefully will want to work with me to create their perfect bridal jewellery.

However I am always, always aware that business is not always straight forward, and opportunities may present themselves the most surprising of ways. My mind is always open to the possibility of making new connections and potential future business, wherever I am and whatever I am doing. Surely having an open mind, and a non-judgemental approach, is the best way to promote your business?

I approached a cake maker today at the bridal fayre. Although I was there as a stall holder, I was also a potential customer for them. I am currently looking for a cake for an event I have coming up shortly, and as the cake maker had 'cakes for any occasion' displayed on their banner, I thought I would investigate what they could offer me. They had samples of their cake on the table, and when I asked what type of cake they do, they said they would offer me a sample, but they are for the brides, and not the stall holders.

Now I understand that businesses at this type of event would not want their samples going to people who are clearly just out to get a 'freebie'. But had the cake maker have listened, she would have heard that I was actually a potential customer, and not just another stall holder. I was really quite incensed by this - surely it is so presumptious that I wouldn't buy from her just because I wasn't a bride?

I went to another cake maker at the same event, and she was more than happy to let me try one of her samples, and it was delicious. I would definitely consider the second company for the purchase of my cake - I would not consider the first due to their poor attitude, and I feel that this is such a shame for them. Their cake may have been really yummy - but I didn't get the chance to find out, which ultimately may have lost them a sale.

So the moral of the story - don't assume! Be aware that custom can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes...and usually in the place you'd last expect to find it!

Bridal Fayre - The Beaches Hotel, Prestatyn - 20th March 2011

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to say a big thank you to those who came to visit my stand at The Beaches Hotel Bridal Fayre today! It was a pleasure to meet you all!

I've had a great day today - very busy and tiring, which is a good thing! I got to speak to lots of brides-to-be, and really enjoyed hearing about all of their lovely plans for their forthcoming weddings! There are some gorgeous colour themes out there at the moment...the most dramatic I heard today was hot pink and burnt orange, which I think sounds delicious!

Of course I took some pics to share with you!...

Dreaming the impossible dream...?

Hi everyone!

I've been thinking....(dangerous, I know!)

Is it really possible, in today's over-saturated market, to make a living from doing something that you love to do?

I work part time in a building society, which, although is not my passion in life, does pay some of the bills. But at what point do we give in to living a humdrum lifestyle - plodding along every day, sometimes gritting our teeth at the prospect of another dreary day in the office - all just to 'pay the bills'?

I imagine that not everyone finds themselves in this situation. My husband is a prime example - he is a retail manager, and whilst his job is very strenuous and stressful, he genuinely really enjoys his job. He gets a real buzz out of going into work - he comes home tired, but satisfied after a busy day doing something he loves to do.

I, on the other hand, sadly do not share his sentiments. I have always wanted to make my own set of circumstances - take control of my own actions. Whilst I don't mind working within a team of colleagues, there has always been something hugely appealing to me about being my own boss, and my idea of a dream career would be to turn my passion for making jewellery into a sustainable business.

But is this dreaming the impossible dream? Is there a place for handmade in today's society? I feel that more and more people are turning to handmade goods to get away from the mass-produced predictability that we so often see crammed in the shops and on the internet....

I'm quite tired tonight (probably from the excitement from the arrival of the new pendants this morning!) so that's all I can write for now...but it is definitely a subject I will be revisiting very soon!

First new pendants have arrived!

I HAD to share my excitement with you!

Since deciding on the concept for my new range of Swarovski pieces, I have been spending a lot of time researching the best cuts and shapes to ensure this range is absolutely fabulous. Whilst I have a complete and undying passion for anything Swarovski make (apart from the cutesy ornaments - I'm not too keen on those lol!) I have started to narrow down my favourite stones and shapes that will form the beginnings of the new collection.

I want to bring you the freshest and most beautiful stones that Swarovski currently have on offer. Only the best will do! I was extremely excited (and possibily a little scary!) when the postman delivered the first selection of my chosen pendants...I ripped open the bag, and it was like opening a ray of sunshine! The pendants that arrived this morning are absolutely STUNNING. I was with a friend when I opened the package, and she has already placed an order! Although the design process is still very much in progress, I thought I would share a sneaky peak with you of what's to come in the next few weeks...

This photo really does not do them justice - I took this pic on my iPhone so it's not exactly the best quality!

Hi everyone!

Just a quick post this morning! I was up quite late last night working on the first edition of the newsletter, so I'm feeling a little bit weary this morning lol!

This may be very embarrassing to admit, but every morning I wake up and the first thing I do is check to see if I have any new followers! I'm now at 10, which I think is wonderful...such a great feeling to know that there are people out there who are interested in me, and what I do!

So massive hugs to you all...I really appreciate your support!

Hi everyone!

I'm going to start doing my Treasury feature on a Friday...so every Friday check back to see what items I have chosen to share with you all!

For those who aren't sure what a Treasury is, it's a collection of hand-picked, handmade items that fit a certain theme. I'm going to try and keep the themes interesting and varied, so they should be really fun to look through!

This week's Treasury is 'Practical Pretties!'. I love nothing more than finding an item that is not only beautiful to look at, but also serves a worthwhile purpose in or around the home. So in this week's Treasury, you will find 16 items that look great, but are also useful! From egg cup cosies to serving plates, spoons to coasters, click the below link to take a look at this week's fabulous finds!

Regular Newsletters coming soon!!!

Hi everyone!

I'd have never thought that getting my jewellery 'out there' would be so technical!

Now I'm not the most technically-minded person in the world. I can just about make a call on my iPhone, and HTML to me may as well be hieroglyphics.

But despite my technological misgivings, I am currently working on a fabulous regular newsletter that I will be able to send to all of my lovely followers and customers! I'm planning on sending out maybe one newsletter a month, with updates on new designs and exciting Carabijoux updates.

I would love it if you could join my mailing list to be one of the first to receive my first edition! If you'd like to subscribe, please complete the small form on the tool bar on the right :0)

Mistakes are not mistakes if you learn something...

Hi everyone!

I just came across this saying, and it really struck true with me.

We all do things that we either regret doing, or feel self-critical when things go wrong. Well, I know I certainly do! I think that when you when you care deeply about something, and that something doesn't work out like you imagined it would, it is easy to become defeated and deflated. Whether it be a project we are working on that doesn't go to plan, or an argument with a friend or family member, we do come across these situations in life where we think to ourselves 'I wish I hadn't done that...'.

Over the last few months, I have often tried out new techniques or used new materials, and the end result wasn't the one I wanted. If something I am working on doesn't work out, I often feel that I have 'failed'. But 'failure' is such a strong word...surely failure is not giving it a go in the first place? This is now becoming my mindset...how will I know if I don't try? And if trying means mistakes along the way, who cares? How can we expect to learn from life if we don't face the fear, and do it anyway?

If there is something that you are wanting to try out, but are reluctant to go for it in case it doesn't pan out, how will you ever know if you don't give it a try? It will either work, or it won't. If it works, you've achieved what you set out to, and should be proud! If it doesn't work, you will have learned something about why it hasn't worked, and you should be proud! Because now that you have tried, you can start to think around the situation in a different way, because now you have something to work from. If we are learning, we are growing... :0)

Hope you enjoyed my little musing for today xxx

I'm saying goodbye to my toes!!!

Hi everyone!

Well, the title of my blog is 'Life, Inspiration & Frustration'...I haven't really made a post about my 'life' yet, so here goes!

As I think I mentioned at the very start, I am currently expecting our first baby! We are so so excited about our forthcoming arrival...our little girl is due on July 6th 2011. This baby means so much to us. A few years back, my husband and I were told that we would not be able to have children, due to a condition I have called PCOS. So this little baby is our miracle, on so many levels...

So...as part of my blog, I would love to keep you all updated with our progress! I have just hit 24 weeks yesterday, so the time is flying by. I like to include photos in with my posts so that there is something interesting for you to look at, so I thought I would include my latest 'bump' photo! This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago, so my bump has grown a little since then...

Baby Bump at 22 weeks...
I also thought I'd share our last scan photograph with you all. I love looking at scan photos...it's so amazing to think that there's a little person in there! This scan was done at the hospital 3 weeks ago...

21 week scan
I will keep you all updated as the weeks go by! And hopefully around the first week in July I will be introducing our little lady to you all!

Love and hugs xxx

I mentioned in my previous post that I have published a Treasury on Etsy. One of the designers in the showcase, Stephanie from Cattywampussstudios, has designed and created this beautiful twig star wreath. I just love this...I wanted to share it with you all.

Whimsy! - A collection of the fanciful and spontaneous...

Hi everyone!

I decided to create my first ever Treasury on Etsy yesterday (for those of you who are not sure what a Treasury is, it's a collection of items that I have hand-picked to fit into a certain theme). All of the items in my Whimsy! Treasury are available to purchase from Etsy...

I thought long and hard about a good theme for my Treasury. It seemed that the seasons have all been done, colours have been explored and textures been investigated...I wanted to find a subject that was a little more unsual.

I seem to be drawn to things that are just a little bit quirky. But they have to be pretty, too. So I trawled Etsy for what I feel fits the theme 'Whimsy!' particularly well. I am really pleased with the result, as the Treasury looks great. Please take a look at these talented artisans by clicking the link below:

I am so, so excited about a new range of pendants I am working on. As explained in my previous posts, I am putting a lot of thought and consideration into improving and expanding my product range, and I know that you will love my new designs as much as I do!

Just to give you a sneak peak, here is one of the stunning pendants that is on it's way...

Simple and elegant, this is just so so beautiful...I can't wait to share the end result with you all! In addition to these sophisticated pendants, I'm also injecting a little fun and frivolity into my collection...which may just include coral and super-cute starfish! I'll keep you posted!

Hi guys!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I started to 'make' jewellery when I was just 5 years old...21 years ago! It has been a lifelong passion of mine, and whilst I have often dabbled in other art and craft interests, it has been the one love that I always return to...

A couple of years ago, I decided to take my hobby to the next level. I started doing jewellery shows, and craft fairs, and I built my own website. I did have sales at most of the events that I took part in, which although should have been an encouraging boost in my new venture, something just didn't feel right. I wasn't satisfied, and I could not figure out why...

Then one day, it hit me. I had started to make jewellery that I thought people wanted to buy, and not what I really felt passionate about making. When designing and creating a piece of jewellery, I would always have the 'sale' in mind...I was making a product that I believed had 'saleability', and not something that I truly enjoyed creating. No wonder I felt uninspired after an event that I had sold my work at...it didn't really feel like 'my work'..

I turned a corner then. I decided, about 6 months ago, to start making jewellery that I REALLY wanted to make. I mean..really let go, and just go with what feels right to me. I figured that if I worked with passion in my soul, it would come across in the end product that I create. So I set about experimenting..finding what felt real to me. I began to make jewellery that I myself would want to wear, and by doing so my confidence in myself began to grow. If I felt special wearing a piece of my own jewellery, then surely others would, too....

But here comes the sticking point! I discovered that the type of jewellery I like to make (and wear) is not particularly technical, and there is not a huge deal of skill involved in making my favourite pieces. I discovered that I have a passion for Swarovski Crystal, and my favourite creations were those that were very simple, and not fussy. Even though I loved the look and feel of the jewellery I now feel passionate about making, I often wondered whether I could legitimately call myself a 'jewellery artist'. I would often compare myself to artists that spend hours and hours creating just one piece, and somehow my work felt insignificant.

But here is the key! I soon realised that comparing myself to other artists was not only self-sabotage, but also highly unproductive. My lack of confidence in just going with what I felt was right was really holding me back, and I knew I had to change my viewpoint on the matter. Some of my most successful pieces have also been the simplest - just a single Swarovski pendant on a Sterling Silver chain can be the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. I realised that not every potential customer is looking for jewellery that is elaborate and complex - sometimes simplicity is just what is needed. And it wasn't a matter of not having the skill to produce more detailed designs - the pieces I had been making for years were extremely time-consuming and intricate, with a lot of skill and practice involved to make each one.

I evaluated my inventory, and now I really believe that the jewellery I create is a reflection of me. And because I now really enjoy what I do, I believe that this enthusiasm really shines through when I talk about my jewellery to potential customers. So the moral of the story is...I learned not to procrastinate by ignoring my instincts, and to just jump in and get creative! I have learnt to be brave, and not be afraid of others being quick to judge my work. I have now realised that jewellery is very much a case of personal taste and preference, and there will be those who decide to purchase my work (and enjoy wearing it), and those that won't. But one thing is for sure...I will continue to feed my passion and will always follow my instincts.

Charmed, I'm sure...!

One thing I have been wanting to make for some time now are mobile phone charms.

Now I'm not one to dress up to my mobile...my poor iPhone is not-so-delicately 'shoved' in an boring black leather case. But I think one of the reasons I'm not into 'blinging' up my mobile is because all of the accessories I have seen are all...well...naff (to put it politely).

So here is my solution! I have created a super-sparkly, yet simple, mobile phone charm that will brighten up any handset! I'm going to be lauching a range of these cute Swarovski mobile phone charms, but here is the first. It features a stunning Swarovski 18mm Vitrail Light Heart pendant, and that's all it needs! So simple, but yet really eye-catching. Now available to buy on my Etsy shop for £9.50, and comes in a little organza pouch. This would make an ideal gift!

More Inspiration!!

I also found this super-cute key charm today when I was trying to find some new and interesting components to introduce to my range...I love it because it is quite chunky, and will look fantastic when teamed with a sparkling Swarovski charm...

Inspiration - Fallen Angel...

Hi all!

I had to share this with you! I'm currently doing a LOT of market research, and am looking at various different ways I can grow my product line. One of the ideas I have had in particular is to create some more fun pieces, still featuring Swarovski crystal of course! So I'm looking into various charm and pendant ideas. I came across this today, and just love it!

All I can say is...watch this space! :0)

So what's with the Swarovski, then?

Diamonds are a girls' best friend, right?

Not when you can't afford them!

Swarovski Crystal, for me, not only looks stunning, but it's also a fabulous medium to work with. I'll do another post I think on the history of Swarovski (and what makes it special in a technical way) - I just wanted to share with you why I love working with it.

Jewellery that has been made with Swarovski beads or pendants GRABS ATTENTION!!! I have found now that people nearly always comment on the jewellery I am wearing, and how striking it is. Swarovski beads and stones have such a brilliant cut, that the light catches from every angle. This applies to their whole range of products - from the tiniest of bicone beads (like in the hair barettes above) to the larger pendants.

But having said that, the thing I love so much about Swarovski is that whilst it is attention-seeking, it can do so in quite a subtle way. Sometimes in my pieces I use very little Swarovski - because that is all that is needed. Just a hint of sparkle is often enough to turn a piece of jewellery from bland, to beautiful. The versatility of using Swarovski is one of the things I love about using it - I am in control of the bling-ometer. Some of my designs are completely full-on blingtastic, and they are just stunning. But sometimes, stunning is not what is called for by the wearer. If you wore my 'Tiffany' bracelet just going down to Tesco, you may get a few funny looks...

'Tiffany' Bracelet - http://www.etsy.com/listing/70014210/tiffany-bracelet-stunning-swarovski

So, what I find so great about Swarovski is that it gives me the opportunity to create both stunning and simple. Or sometimes a bit of both... :0)

Today, I have had my first 3 sales via my new Etsy shop. What a fabulous feeling! One of the items purchased was a 'Star of Japan' pendant - it's so lovely to see people supporting such a great cause.

In addition to this...I'd like to formally welcome my first ever blog follower! So a HUGE welcome to LeanneLott!!!

Star of Japan - My very small way in helping the relief effort...

What has happened in Japan in recent days has really saddened me. Here in the UK we are fortunate to not have to experience extreme nature in the form of earthquakes and tsunamis, so my heart truly goes out to those who do...

I am going to keep this post short, as I don't think there are words that are appropriate for the scale of the disaster that has occurred in Japan. I really felt the need to do something to join in with the wider community of support for the many relief efforts currently taking place to help Japan get through this crisis.

I have designed and created the 'Star of Japan' Swarovski Crystal pendant. I feel that the star is the perfect symbol of hope, and let us hope that the people of Japan are shown are a star of hope to get them through these dark days.

You can find these pendants to buy on Etsy for a very reasonable £18 - 50% of the sale will be donated to the Red Cross. I will not make any profit from these pendants. I am also offering reduced P&P to encourage customers to support me in this great cause:

Own website and Etsy...why both? The trials of 'becoming known'

If there are any Etsians out there reading my blog (and if there are, a special welcome to you!), you will have to excuse my slight ignorance. I do happen to have a big sign suspended from my forehead that says 'Beware. Esty Newbie'.

I am completely new to the world of Etsy. For those of you that have no idea what Etsy is (which was me until a few days ago) it is an online marketplace specifically designed to promote artisans producing handmade items. You can visit my Etsy shop by going to www.etsy.com/shop/carabijoux.

I also have my own website - http://www.carabijoux.co.uk/ - which has taken me a couple of years to design and build, and has been very much a labour of love. But what I have come to learn and realise (which had I have not been so naive I may have realised much sooner) is that a website does NOT mean that people will get to see your work. Unless you are out in the public domain continually telling people that it exists, people will not find it. Yes I do come up on Google (if you type in 'Carabijoux' on a Google search) but for obvious reasons this is not a particularly good marketing strategy...

So this, I sincerely hope, is where Etsy may come into play for me. Etsy is an international platform, and it will provide me with an opportunity to get my designs 'out there'. Even if my Etsy experiment amounts to nothing, I know that at least a handful of people have been viewing my listings. Which in itself is a fantastic feeling.

Of course I have fees to pay on Etsy, which I would not have to pay should a customer buy from my own personal website. But as it stands, I don't have anyone visiting my own site, so this is irrelevant.

I will of course keep you all updated with any progress that I may, via either outlet!!!

Finding who 'you' want to be...

When I say 'you', I mean the creative 'you'. What 'you' stand for.

Now, I used to think that this was quite a simple decision. Surely it is easy to decide what 'you', as a creative mind, are all about. But after years of to-ing and fro-ing, going backwards and forwards, and the constant changing of minds...I've realised that that's it. It's not the final outcome that makes you who 'you' are, it's the journey that you go on to pursue the final goal.

Let me explain further...

I have always had quite a 'straight forward' mind. I like things to be neat (well, I struggle with this one when it comes to my home!) and well ordered. I really don't like confusion, and a messy mind. I like to keep things simple...and focussed. Making 'jewellery' has never been enough for me - I always wanted to create a 'collection' - a cohesive collection of items that work together, and are easily identifiable as 'my designs'. I have strived, and to an extent continue to strive, to get to this goal. I have honed and refined my techniques and materials to the point where I now have my collection...I now design and create pieces made primarily from Swarovski crystal, and for the most part they are designed with either a bride or special occasion in mind, such as the example below:

Aphrodite Necklace (http://www.etsy.com/listing/70029166/aphrodite-necklace-stunning-triple)
However it is becoming more and more apparent to me that despite reaching the point that I have been working towards for all of this time, it does not satisfy me. I have created what I always wanted to create - a range of jewellery specifically designed for the bridal market - however that no longer seems to be enough for me. It is this changing of spirit that led me to post about this particular subject. I am starting to believe that the journey you embark on to find who you want to be, as an artist, and the final product that you create, is essentially who you are. It's all about the journey.

Honing in...

So to continue with the story...

I have been making jewellery for years. Well, when I say 'making jewellery', I mean...trying out different techniques, learning new ways of doing things, working out how things fit together, getting an idea for what materials I do and don't like. To be honest, this part of the process would probably have made quite an interesting blog to follow. I have tried so, so many different types of products, materials, techniques...it would have been great to have shared with you all what I found hot, or not.  Here are some examples of my earlier pieces, that I can honestly say that although they are not examples of my best work, have played a vital part in forming what I design and create today...

But as it is now, I feel I am starting to 'get somewhere'. After working through copious amounts of beads to find the special qualities I have been searching for, I finally found it. I found it in the form of Swarovski crystal.

I think I'll do a whole different post on my love affair with Swarovski, but for now, the point I am trying to make is I have found a medium (and therefore style) that I am comfortable with. I tried making earthy, bohemian type jewellery, using lots of natural materials, and it just didn't seem to sit right with me. I tried going down the Venetian glass route...although I love a lot of the ever-so-pretty glass and lampwork beads available on the market today (and could quite happily sit just looking at a bowl of them), they just didn't 'do it' for me.

So, after months (if not years) of trial and error, I have found a style of jewellery that is 'me'. Now I also went through a stage of trying to 'appeal to all markets'. Whilst the idea in itself was not a bad one, again it just wasn't, and isn't, for me. I really wanted to find a material and style I was PASSIONATE about...and then stick to it. I feel that there is nothing worse than sitting down to create a bunch of jewellery that you like, but don't adore. I feel it shows in the end result.

Part of the problem for me, therefore, has been the expense in creating my 'style'. As my husband often comments, it's absolutely typical that I would choose a medium that also happens to be one of the more expensive of the ones I have tried. But for me, it's worth every single penny. The feeling I get from being surrounded by sparkling Swarovski crystal is just magical...and I hope it shows in the pieces I produce.

My current collection, I feel, is just the beginning. It's a starting point for the next stage of the journey...

So where does the jewellery come into all of this?

Can't believe I'm on my third post already! (well to be fair, I could have put all three posts into one, but I'm trying to make it easy for you guys!).

At the age of 5, eleven years ago, I found a shop in my hometown of Chester called 'Constellation Beads'. It was a back alley shop..you would have walked past it if you didn't know it was there. The minute I walked into that shop, I was in total awe.

I adored the little wooden trays of beads...so many beads. So many colours, shapes, sizes, textures..the choice was almost too much for me to take in. If you had given me the choice between a sweet shop and this bead shop, I'd have forgone the chance of a rosy apple. My parents had finally found something that kept me quiet (which believe me was some mean feat).

My obsession with beads and jewellery making has gotten stronger and stronger since that day. I did my first jewellery workshop when I was about 9, and that was the only one I have ever participated in. Everything I have learned, I have taught myself. Mainly by trial and error, and there has been a lot of frustration along the way.

But I stand here now at the point where I want to share my passion with the wider world. I feel it is now time for me to go to the next level. And I want you to come with me!

A little bit about me...

I guess it would be helpful (and hopefully entertaining) if I told you a little bit about myself. So the first couple of posts will fill in the story so far...

My name is Cerries (hey, it's as good a place to start as any!) and I live in North Wales in the UK. I live with my husband, Andy, who is my best friend (I can hear you groaning from here!), and our furry friends - Cadbury (the dog) and Charley and Izzy (the cats).

I'm also expecting our first child...our little daughter is due on July 6th 2011. So I guess the joys of pregnancy may come into this blog once or twice! (or not, if my heartburn is particularly bad...you may see another side to me then!!).

I work in the financial sector, although this is by no means my forte. I work part time (just two and a half days a week), which leaves me lots of time for my real passion in life...being creative. I love being creative. Sometimes I feel I'm not very good at it.

From a very early age I have always been into making 'stuff'. I say 'stuff' because my early creations were not particularly refined (dolls house made from a cereal box etc), and I have continued to feed my desire for making things over the years. I did art at school - I have GCSEs and A-Levels (and three quarters of a universtity degree) in art and graphic design. I was always doodling. I appreciate art in strange places. I don't appreciate art snobs.

So that, in a very small nutshell, is me. Cerries. 26. Married (with one on the way). Creative. Sometimes finds being creative a challenge.

Welcome to my new blog!

I may as well be completely honest right from the start.

I am completely new to the world of blogging...

But please don't hold that against me! I'm sure I'll get the hang of it in no time at all, and I really hope that my blog grows and blossoms into a bustling little spot where I can always come to to let out my joys (and my setbacks!!!)...

Welcome to my world... :0)
